Plot 14

Notes from a small allotment garden

Raised beds with tomatoes and beans

Autumn on the plot

October

The last of the tomatoes came in this week, most of them still green. They are ripening slowly on the kitchen windowsill. The runner beans are done and the canes are stacked by the shed for next year.

Next jobs: clear the old squash bed, spread compost over the empty beds and plant garlic before the ground gets cold. The broad beans can go in at the same time.

What did well this year

Beetroot, chard and the climbing beans. Courgettes, as always, far more than anyone could eat. Carrots were poor again — the soil is too heavy on this side of the plot.
